The remains of Hebburn 'C' Pit alongside Ellison St and Lyon St. Hebburn had 3 pits A, B & C.
A Pit was sandwiched between the low road (Wagonway Rd) and the bottom end of Argyle St where it becomes Auckland Rd.
B Pit was between Victoria Rd East and St Oswalds church, east of Black Rd. Sir Humphrey Davey inventor of the Miners safety lamp used gas from B Pit to test the lamp. He also took it into the Pit to test it. |

This was a reservoir . I remember being on it on a raft kids had made. It was badly silted up so only 2 ft deep, and just left when the Bauxite closed. |

This was a factory that made gear wheels & Gearboxes for industry. It was originally the Platers Sheds for the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co, who went bust after a couple of years building ships. It stood empty for some years and was bought by Reay Gear Co of Gateshead. They ran it for a while but later it became George Angus Gears, then finally RW Transmissions. It closed down mid 1970s . |

On the corner was the Ellison House Hotel & next door was the Theatre Royal. The Theatre burned down Oct 7th 1950 so it looks like this photo was after the fire as the Hotel looks badly damaged & its difficult to see the Theatre . |
