The factory in the centre of the picture has been taken over by Horners by the time this photo was taken. Horners made the famous Dainty Dinah toffees and the Blue Boy toffees. The children in the school next door, called Victoria Church of England School, remember the smell of the toffee, especially the rum and butter toffees. They were lovely! |

My Mother Olive Crawford worked there in the 1920's and was once reprimanded by the great man himself - George W Horner for demonstrating the Charleston during working hours !! |

The parish church of Chester-le-Street. The parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert has a tall spire and can be seen at the back of the historic picture. The monks from Lindisfarne came to Chester-le-Street carrying the body of St Cuthbert in the year 883. A church was built in the centre of the old Roman fort, where the parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert stands today. The body of St Cuthbert rested there for over a hundred years until the monks took it with them on their journey to Durham, where St Cuthbert's remains rest today. |
