Clyde Paper Mills, Cambuslang Road, Rutherglen, Glasgow This works was founded c.1857 to make paper continuously on a Fourdrinier machine driven by steam power. By 1967 it was the only paper mill in Scotland making newsprint, and was electrically powered. This shows the mill from the opposite bank of the River Clyde. The bulk of the buildings are out of sight to the left. Papermaking requires large amounts of water and the flat-roofed building covered the river water intake. The Scottish paper industry suffered badly from foreign competition from the late 1950s, and this works closed in 1971. The site was quickly cleared, and has been redeveloped.
