Joseph Stalin stayed here for 2 weeks in 1907 while attending the fifth conference of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. Rowton House, Fieldgate Street, Whitechapel, an 816 bed hostel for poor and working class men opened in August 1902. Costing six pence per night, facilities included a dining room, reading room, smoking room, wash rooms, barber's shop, shoemaker's and tailor's rooms. Accommodation was in private cubicles containing a bed, chair, shelf and chamber pot. Established by Lord Rowton in 1892, there were eventually 7 in London, this was the fifth, plus another in Birmingham. See https://www.workhouses.org.uk/RowtonWhitechapel/ |

Saint Mary Matfelon Church which was destroyed during The Blitz in 1940. The ruins were finally demolished in 1952 and the site of the church was known as "St Mary's Park" until it was renamed "Altab Ali Park" in 1998. The outline of the church is all that remains of it. |
