The new Owen Owen store. A newly-built shop that was destroyed in the 1940 bombing. The orientation of the post-war rebuilt shop was different to the original

The brand new Rex cinema. This was destroyed in the 1940 bombing. The basement area was used as a market for many years -'The Rex Market'- up until the early / mid 1960s when the site was redeveloped as the lower end of Smithford Way.

The Hotchkiss works in Gosford St - later the Morris. After the war this site was taken over by the Inland Revenue and the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance - later the DHSS. In 1966 or 67 the larger part was destroyed by fire - people were singing in the street 'the tax office is burning' - wonderful community spirit! The smaller part that lies alongside Gosford St was then mainly DHSS until a new office was built. The site has been extensively refurbished and is now part of Coventry university.
