Nine Elms goods yards and the original terminus of the London and South Western Railway before the extension to Waterloo. In the early days some passengers used to transfer to river boats to get to the centre of London while others would have the walk the last few miles.
These goods yards received trains from the south west of England and the docks at Southampton. Items such as meat and vegetables, both home grown and imported, were forwarded by road to the London Markets.
Eventually, when the yards both north and south of the railway, were closed the land was used for the New Covent Garden Market which was supplied by road haulage. |

Concrete coaling tower for the gravity feeding of coal into locomotives bunkers and tenders. Coal wagons were lifted and tipped into the hopper at the top of the tower. Such structures replace hand and crane coaling with great saving in time. However they did little to reduce the amount of dust on the atmosphere. |
