The year may not be 1933 as stated, as the Mauretania's hull was painted white in about 1930-31 (it's not exactly clear when). The Empress of Britain's maiden voyage was in May 1931, from Southampton. So photo was possibly taken just prior to Empress of Britain's maiden voyage, and before Mauretania's repaint (and she looks a bit patchy here). |

Actually, it has been fairly well established that Mauretania was painted white for the first time in May 1933. Therefore, this image shows her just before getting her white cruising dress. In addition, if you look closely at Olympic, she is in her 1933 configuration with fewer lifeboats and darker painted cargo cranes. |
