The Ketton Portland Cement Co. Ltd was formed as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Thomas W Wards, and began operations in 1929. Initially a one-kiln operation making 60,000 tonnes a year, it expanded one kiln at a time in 1933, 1939, 1954, 1962 and 1967 to an operation with six wet process kilns with a capacity of 750,000 tonnes a year. In 1977 and 1986, dry process kilns were installed and the wet process kilns were removed. The current (2012) two-kiln capacity is 1.3 million tonnes a year. It became officially incorporated into Castle Cement (now Hanson Cement: part of the HeidelbergCement Group) in 1986.
