This terrace of cottages was built in the 19thC by timber merchant George Thompson whose timber yard was in castle Street. It was always known as Thompson's Row. They were demolished as 'slum' housing in the 1960s and Rampart Way now passes over the site.

Ford Place built late 1790s soon after removal of the market place from this part of the town. In the 1930s Sir William Gentle made this his retirement home. In 1949 after the death of Sir William it was purchased by Norfolk CC and opened as an old people's home in 1952. Closed by Norfolk CC in 1996 and reopened as a private nursing home the following year. Ford Place was extended by the Fison family in the late 1880s.
