Windovers Ltd.
One of a number of coachbuilders operating in the area. The motor engineering and coachbuilding industries were very heavily represented in the area. They were, no doubt, filling the vacuum left by the local aircraft production sites and the associated skilled labour force, which were quickly run down at the end of WW1.
Windovers moved to Hendon in 1924 from Huntingdon. They built custom bodies for luxury cars and later for coaches, taxis (including those from Beardmore next door) and fire engines - they were one of the coach builders who built bodies for the Green Goddess fire pumps in the 1950s.
The company closed down in 1956.

Used to live there when first married. House opposite had thatched roof, although we knew it was only built in mid 1920's. In retrospect I think was probably an Ernest Trobridge designed house as he was very active in this area. |
