Peter Spence's Sulphuric Acid Plant. They used the old "Lead Chamber Process" to make sulphuric acid. The acid was an integral part of alum manufacture. You can see the actual lead chambers in this photo. They were huge chambers made of wood on the outside lined with lead on the inside. Later, when the business was bought by Laporte Industries Ltd, this part of the site was dismantled and a new acid plant constructed which used the more modern "Contact Process".
