Loved Acton park as a young child, a short walk from where I lived. Enjoyed the fairs that were held in Acton park I won a goldfish there once I was so happy I couldn't wait till I got home to show my mum & dad, I had gone with my nan who lived in the same household.
All my kids have spent time & fun in the park from the years '76, '93 & '95 plus grand-kids too. |

There is a considerable amount of tentage evident on Wormwood Scrubs. It was owned by the War Office and was used to exercise cavalry horses and for rifle practice (I believe that the MoD are still the owners of the land). The tents would suggest that there might have been some event taking place in the London area at that time, which required extra troops being temporarily drafted into the area who could not otherwise be accommodated. What was happening in 1921? Coal strike, perhaps? |

Well I was told that this place was built by prisoners of war,and looking at those huts, they do look like a prison camp, too numerous for temp offices.I am not at all sure of my facts though,What do you think....It does look very Stalag, does'nt it? |

I have just noticed the date on this photo,1921.Maybe those huts are just accommodation blocks for the workers. The war had been over for three years, would we have had POW's in England then? |

I too was told it was built by POWs. I worked in the Post Office Telephones department based there in the late 1970s, and there were still some people who'd worked there before WW2, so the story may well have been true, and passed on over the years. The building was a bit 'rough and ready' inside, definitely a rushed job! |
