House mostly built by John Penn (1760-1834), grandson of William Penn who founded Pennsylvania, with money he received in compensation from the US for the familys estate.Apparently bought by N L Jackson and turned into a country club in 1908, bought by Sir Noel Mobbs (who helped found Slough Trading Estate)in 1928, still a posh country club, it was used as a film location by nearby Pinewood Studios notably for the golfing scenes in Goldfinger. Serves them bloody well right that they built a rough LCC housing estate nearby in 30's inc the equally rough William Penn Secondary Modern Boys School which was the best school I ever went to (after headmaster Marchant left)the Primary School(who never liked us) have since taken it over and demolished it!Is it just me but most of the schools I went to (48-60)have been closed/demolished? The school played footer on the rough park across the lake from the house, changing in the open, no wonder I hate sport! |
