"Retorts" in which coal was "cooked" leaving a solid fuel - "Coalite" which was sold to the public. Many chemicals were separated in this "cooking" process. They were sent over to the "Refinery" on the other side of Buttermilk Lane where they were separated using fractionating columns and other processes to be used in many products, such as fertilisers. Many of the chemicals and processes were hazardous.

The original Railway Cottages built by the LDECR. These retained this title until at least 2017. The newer houses on the other side of the railway line were never railway property, but the settlement both old and new was always referred to collectively as "Railway Cottages"
