"Retorts" in which coal was "cooked" leaving a solid fuel - "Coalite" which was sold to the public. Many chemicals were separated in this "cooking" process. They were sent over to the "Refinery" on the other side of Buttermilk Lane where they were separated using fractionating columns and other processes to be used in many products, such as fertilisers. Many of the chemicals and processes were hazardous. '
