This was one of the Second World War shadow factories, part of a programme instituted by Sir Kingsley Wood and Herbert Austin. Rolls Royce manufactured Merlin engines here - engines which were used in the Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire and the Avro Lancaster, amongst other aircraft.
