General engineers, they had lots of metal turning lathes. Workers stood on duck boards the whole floor covered in congealed oil. Loads of men stood over lathes dimly lit by a small lamp, constantly smoking "Woodbines" or "Senior Service" cigarettes. As a young boy it was interesting to watch the door was always open.
You always made the odd penny going to the shop for them, usually for cigarettes.
