Approximate site in 1692 of George Sorocold's water pumping engine . Distributed river water to houses and works through 4 miles of elm pipes. Was first provincial town to have pumped water. Silk mill has a blue plaque which commemerates Sorocold's work and that of John Lombe in building silk mill in cr 1720.
