The Royal Oak pub (the old pub was demolished and rebuilt in 1930s style not long after this picture was taken, but failed to survive the decline of the English pub in more recent times. A McDonalds now stands on the site.

The tree-lined route of Brooks Drive, constructed in the mid-19th century by Manchester banker Samuel Brooks who had recently acquired large tracts of land in the area. It ran from Brooklands railway station (which Brooks persuaded the railway company to open in 1859) to Prospect House, west of Hale Barns on the Altrincham-Wilmslow (A538)road. His idea was to attract Manchester businessmen to buy his land to construct their dream country villas - the opening of the Manchester-Altrincham railway line in 1851 having made speedy commuting possible for the first time. He had a track record for successful business ventures, but in this case he sold very few plots beyond the first mile or so from Brooklands station.
