Paddle steamers. But they also appear to be tugs, moored up. The one nearer the camera has smoke issuing from the funnel

At the south side of Dockwray Square is the 1810 High Light. It replaced the 1727 tower, seen with a black top, to the right.

Dockwray Square includes the open space on the Bank Top. Originally it was a railed garden, shared by the occupants. The small open space to the left is Toll Square, with Tyne Terrace at the far right. King Street leads out of the north side of Dockwray Square. At the river edge is part of the Fish Quay. The building closest to the edge was the 1895 ice factory. To the centre left of the quay, on Bell Street, is a large block of Council flats, under construction. Also building, ar the corner of Dockwray Square and King Street, is an extension to J. W. Moore's printing works.

For a few years in the 80s I used to live in one of the Trinity Buildings above the diagonal path above the Fish Quay, they were a bit neglected at the time but still had some sense of past glory. The tower was known as the High Light and had a matching tower out of sight - the Low Light. Each had a light in the top and when both were lined up boats knew they were on a safe course into the river. Dockwray square became a fairly rough area in the 60s and 70s but the sense of community was strong as was the smell of the river on a hot day.
