This view is before the East Coast main line was widened to four tracks in the mid-1950s, resulting in a second tunnel being constructed parallel to this original tunnel.

I believe that I can make out the number of the locomotive as 1810 which was a K3/2. This became number 61810 under British Railways. The locomotive was built at Darlington on 25/08/1924 and its 1948 shed was 35A New England. It was withdrawn on 15/08/1962 and cut up at Doncaster 31/08/1962.

I would concur with 1810 as the number.

One of Gresley's LNER 2-6-0s hauling a goods train of empty trucks. Possibly returning trucks northwards to collieries. Vapour clinging to the trucks as they exit the tunnel
