Ridgmont Road - this section was built by the Midland Railway and is still railway land, now owned by Network Rail. One of the station car parks occupies much of the area.

Goods Yard. Closed mid-1960s. In 1971/73 a new station building and entrance was erected here, and now has a bus station in the forecourt.

Original station building of the 1860s. Demolished in the 1970s after a new station building was erected on the former goods yard, closed in the mid-1960s.

'Lamp Hut' - where the lamps for signals were refilled and serviced to keep flames and flammable liquids away from the wooden signal box!

Former prison block. Built by the City fathers in the 1860s. Became part of HM Prison services at an unknown date, and was taken over by the Military at the start of WW1. They abandoned it at the end of the war and the City fathers reacquired it for use as a council yard circa 1920.

St Albans South Signal Box. Erected by the Midland Railway in 1892 as part of the building of two extra lines into London (The present Slow lines.) Closed in 1980 as part of the electrification of the line. Became derelict, and was taken over in 2006 by the St Albans Signal Box Preservation Trust. Restored and now regularly open to the public. Cafe - was derelict by 1975 and demolished late that year or soon afterwards - replaced by small block of maisonettes

St.Albans Gaol gatehouse - used as "Slade Prison" in Porridge

This gate house and adjacent building and wall are the only part of the original prison now left. The gatehouse and adjacent building now house the local Registry office.
