43 Berw Road. 1945 my first visit to Pontypridd. I was 7 years old. I was already a rail fan and dearly wished to know what was happening on top of the embankment at the bottom of the garden. There was a closed lane. The nearest I got was to hear the rumble of trains passing above and out of my sight and perhaps a whisp of smoke. Also across the other side of Berw Road was a river that ran black unlike anything I had seen before. So this was my introduction to the Welsh Valleys.

The park was once owned by the Lanover family and was given to the people of Pontypridd after the Great War

as a memorial to the men who died in the war

The course of the Taff Vale Railway's Pont-Shon-Norton Branch from Albion colliery can be traced across the photo from Albion Colliery to the eponymous signal box, joining the main TVR Cardiff Bute Dock-Merthyr Main Line, by this time all under the control of the Great Western Railway.
