This appears to be an Ellerman Lines cargo liner (from the funnel colours) I don't believe they were frequent callers to Newport. Ellerman Lines ships tended to carry 'general cargo' and a small number of passengers on world wide routes rather than bulk coal cargo. Bulk coal cargo was usually carried by 'tramp steamers' around the world. A bit of a mystery as to why this cargo liner would be on a coal loading berth. If it were a coal burning steamer it may have taken on coal bunkers at Newport yet there doesn't appear to be any coal wagons on the lines leading up the coal hoist. |
