A bilingual comprehensive school in West Wales Stryd Y Fro, Aberaeron, Ceredigion, SA46 0DT 1910- Two news classrooms added. 1923 School closed for 8 weeks because of a teachers strike. 1929 - further additions. 1945- Gymnasium opened 1946 272 pupils,12 full time teachers 1950- foundation stone laid for new building - hall,staff rooms. classrooms, workshops, and laboratories. Opened on the 20th December 1951 as Aberaeron County School. 1970 School becomes a Comprehensive. 1985- newspaper reports on substantial deterioration of the school buildings. 1997- 60% of pupils at the school are taught in 20 mobile classrooms. Work starts on rebuilding the school, starting with a new staff car park. Later work included a music block, sixth form area, technology extension - planned completion 1999. In August 2014, named number one in Wales after a stringent evaluation involving all 217 Welsh secondary schools - in WalesOnline's new performance tables. Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron’s feat is made all the more remarkable, given its startling resurgence. In 2013’s inaugural WalesOnline rankings, the school in Ceredigion – which itself is ranked the nation’s best local education authority – was ranked a lowly 153rd in Wales.
