Recorded location of a 2ndWW LAA gun position, S0014641, e01492. Although, being pre-war, there is no sign of it in this photo it supposedly still survived until around 2014 when the old 'Fortysteps' bridge was replaced with the new one. |

The footbridge to the west of the station, known in the town as "Fortysteps", although Network Rail prefer to label it "40 Steps", a favoured location for generations of rail enthusiasts, was demolished at the end of 2013, due to construction of a new road alongside the railway. |

Taunton Railway Station.
The South Block which is not clearly visible is a listed building (Grade 2).
Opened 1842 as part of the Bristol and Exeter Railway.
Many branch lines opened before 1873, going to Yeovil, Watchet, Chard, Barnstaple.
To cope with the traffic the station had a major rebuild in 1868, with the platforms extended in 1895.
The line became part of the Great Western Railway (amalgamation was in 1876).
In 1931-1932 the two tracks were widened to four tracks which forced another station rebuilding (new buildings on the North side).
The central platforms fell into disuse in 1970 until reused from 2000.
The engine shed closed in 1972. |
