Belmont Primary School. Site of Erith Sanatorium. Built in 1893 to hold patients with infectious diseases, it ran until 1945 when it closed and relocated. On the 8th February 1945, a V2 rocket landed in Langdale Crescent, close by, and caused some damage. A week later, a second V2 exploded in the grounds and caused severe damage. The land was later sold to the Kent Education Committee and Belmont Primary School was opened in 1951. Only one building from the Sanatorium remains and is still being used as classrooms. |

I can confirm that there was an air raid shelter there, when the council redeveloped the Pantiles area in the 80's myself and friends ventured down into it. Simply a long thin room with a toilet at one end. Im not sure if it was demolished or simply covered over during the redevelopment. |
