The Bolton to Rochdale line crossed under the Bury to Manchester line here and because of this had a very challenging climb to Knowsley St station |

Opened 1798. Closed 1936 after a breach occurred. There is a society working towards the eventual restoration of the canal. |

The LMS railway sheds are those that still exist today on the East Lancashire Railway. The line trending left to right is the LMS Manchester to Bury line, and the sheds are on the far side. The long shed is known as the car sheds, and would contain the old L&Y and LMS electric units for commuters going to Manchester, and the square shed closer to the main line is the steam shed. In the yards at the neck end (right) there is a the old turn table, and the old water tower/tank. Towards the observer is the old landfill site, which interestingly has a ramped road structure coming from it and coming down to ground level feeds left towards the main Bury Knowsley Street to Bolton line (trends bottom left and curves through centre of picture). The road was probably used for transporting wastes to and from the site. As this is a workshops for a railway ash would be the main constituent with other waste from boiler construction etc. Directly above the roof of the engine sheds the old Knowsley Street Station is visible with the very large square structure of the old L&Y parcels sheds and extensive yards. The arches of the road bridge can be seen just above this, and again these still exist over arching the Heywood Branch of the East Lancashire Railway. To the left od the steam sheds can be seen the triangular section of lines full of coal wagons for distribution around Bury. This is locally known as Buckley Wells. The steam sheds were the location of one of the first steam engine construction works for the Original East Lancashire railway in the mid 1800's. |
