I'm sure that this was the photo in the window of a shop in Princesshay, Exeter for a number of years before the recent redevelopment. It was blown up to approximately 7 feet x 7 feet and although over magnified was a fascinating picture. I've often wondered where it came from, now of course the answer seems obvious.

Holy Trinity Church. No longer a church, Holy Trinity occupies a site, just inside the old South Gate, that has had an ecclesiastical presence since medieval times. Now the home of the Exeter White Ensign Club, a club for servicemen, ex-servicemen and their families. The church closed and was taken over by the White Ensign Club in 1977 as a meeting place and social club. There is a large model of the York Class HMS Exeter on display and other HMS Exeter memorabilia.

The city wall. Part of the 70% of the wall that still remains, an amazing feat for a two thousand year old structure. Up until the redevelopment of part of Southernhay businesses actually incorporated the city wall within their structure and were built right up against the wall. Now the wall is treated with far more respect and is a stand alone historic structure. In this photo it's clear that the wall has been built up against!

Magdalen Street. A street of Georgian houses which survived the war but by the 1950/60's had been allowed to fall into rotting disrepair and were demolished by Exeter City Council in the early 1960's. I used to shop at several of the premises and there's no doubt that they were extremely rundown but it does beg the question of whether these Georgian properties should have been preserved and conserved by the council. The whole area is now given over to the motor car.

This building still stands and has been incorporated into the relatively new Southgate Hotel.

The Onedin Line. Exeter Quay became famous in the 1970's as one of the main locations for the BBC's well loved, Onedin Line. The series, about a ship's master trading from the Port of Liverpool, captured the imagination of the nation, with its evocative theme music from the ballet Spartacus, by Aram Khachaturian. Exeter quayside was used as the Port of Liverpool - the warehouses dating from 1835, the Custom House and fish market, and the Prospect Inn all combined to give the producers an authentic backdrop. Many locals would hang around, watching the filming during the two periods of filming. The quay was also used in 1971 for a previous series of the nautical drama.
