This was Caffyn's Garage (for heavy vehicles) at 505-507 Seaside. Just to the left of here is what is now known as the Seaside/Lottbridge Drove Roundabout but many residents still refer to it as the 'Birds Eye Roundabout'. On 26 Aug 1942, a Canadian sergeant (NC Forsbeck) of the Seaforth Highlanders was manning a Bren gun on the roof of the garage and claimed to have shot down a Fw 190, which crashed at the side of Lottbridge Drive near the gasometers. However, the plane may have been brought down by a Bofors or indeed caused to crash by the blast from another German bomb. (See 'Canucks by the Sea', Eastbourne Local History Society.)

The gas works and its associated branch line railway have all been swept away - they'd gone by the time the 1981 OS map was surveyed

The gas works site is probably close to the present-day Admiral Retail Park
