' This was Caffyn's Garage (for heavy vehicles) at 505-507 Seaside. Just to the left of here is what is now known as the Seaside/Lottbridge Drove Roundabout but many residents still refer to it as the 'Birds Eye Roundabout'. On 26 Aug 1942, a Canadian sergeant (NC Forsbeck) of the Seaforth Highlanders was manning a Bren gun on the roof of the garage and claimed to have shot down a Fw 190, which crashed at the side of Lottbridge Drive near the gasometers. However, the plane may have been brought down by a Bofors or indeed caused to crash by the blast from another German bomb. (See 'Canucks by the Sea', Eastbourne Local History Society.) '
