Reading Gaol - note the overgrown state of the grounds, the prison had been closed for over 11 years. It was reopened at the outbreak of the Second World War for the internment of detained foreigners, but never used for this. It was briefly used for displaced young offenders and then handed over to the Canadian Army for use as a military prison. See also EPW000868 taken in 1920 to see how neat the grounds appeared then.

A good photo documentary book on an area of Reading known as Newtown. The photographs were taken in 1974, prior to large parts of the area being demolished. A lot of the housing was built for the workers of Huntley & Palmer Biscuit Factory....and had a number of pubs & churches as well as a smoke house for the curing of fish and meat. http://tworiverspress.com/wp/newtown-a-photographic-journey-in-reading-1974/
