St. Francis Church - Blitzed in December 1940 when parts of the roofs were burnt but quickly restored, only for the whole interior to be lost in the air raids of Good Friday 1941. After the second world war the ruins were cleared and a new church was built 1950-53. |

I didn't know that. Can you give a source? I think the original Wellington Cottage was a pair. Mine cottages? Any remains of the mine? I think there was a lead smelter nearer the Bridge. |

I'm interested in the history of the New Inn (was there an earlier name?). I have census info and old photos but little before 1841. I think it was demolished (as a laundry) after bomb damage c1941. I don't know when it was built or by whom. Have you anything? |

This is a double-decker swing bridge that carries a road on top and a railway line from the docks to the Portishead Branch on the lower deck. The asymmetric swing section turns on its ‘centre’ being the pier below the control tower arched over the road deck. Image EPW033497 shows a train approaching the bridge from the Docks side. |

The Clifton Suspension Bridge was Brunel's first major project. The asymmetry of the valley required rather different construction for each tower. On the north side the slope rises cliff-like to a shoulder, upon which a relatively low abutment was built on solid rock to carry the north tower. On the south side the slope is closer to 45 degrees requiring a footing to be made and a considerable amount of masonry to be put in place before the south tower and the approach road could be built. The southern Leigh Woods abutment appears from the outside to be solid. However, it contains a series of large faults arranged in a way that maintain the strength of the structure under the tower while keeping the weight of material to be placed on the slope as low as possible. The difficulties experienced in the work caused the construction period, initial set at 12 to 15 months, to take from 1835 to 1840 and to push the cost £2,000 over the estimated £8,000. |
