User Comment Contributions

The Metropolitan cement plant started in 1937. The quarry was operated by the Thurrock Chalk and Whiting Co. The visible quarry face is being worked by "milling", whereby workers in bosuns' chairs chip away chalk with chisel bars, causing it to fall into chutes at the bottom of the face, where it is directed into rail trucks.
