Between October and December of 1859 Charles Darwin resided at Wells House and for a short time North View House nearby. In November his book On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection was published. Darwin began writing the second edition of this while in Ilkley. The nephew of another Charles, this time Dickens, would give lectures on his Uncles works to residents at Wells House.
