In the 40s to 50s this was Nick Cappalanis's Fisn n Chip shop

This is Hawthorn Leslie's Ship Building Yard.

St Aloysius Church house called a 'Presbytery' where the RC Priest's lived. It is on Argyle St corner and still there today in 2020.

This building was called 'The Clinic'. I remember going to the School Dentist's there. The far end adjoining the Hebburn Council Offices was extra office space.

This Building on Carr St/Ellison St corner opposite the General Post Office was an Employment Exchange at first and later became 'The Progressive Club' a working mans club.

This shop on Carr St corner was Wards 'Draper's' . About 1950 as a 6 year old I remember going in it with my mother.

Hebburn Urban District Council Offices on Argyle St/Albert St corner.

My father William B Dunn was born here (47 Lyon St) in 1922

This land soon had a large hut erected on it for St Cuthbert's people eg Scouts, Girl Guides etc. Pics on my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk

This empty land was soon where a large wooden hut was built and used by the Boys Brigade. Lots of BB photos on my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk

'C' Pit Cottages

Smith's the Printers were on this Lyon St/Albert St corner

Argyle St and just outside the 'Trinity Methodist Chapel.

In the 40s this was Doctor Miller's surgery on Bewick St.

This Flat with internal staircase to the back yard was 14 Lyon St and I lived there as a baby in 1944 until a 9 yr old in 1953. The house was haunted and my mother got the Priest from St Aloysius to come and bless the house. Dad said 'what about me I'm a protestant?

On this corner of Bewick St and Cuthbert St was a fish'n'chip shop. In the 40s onwards it was Maggie O'Rourkes.

William St which ran from Prince Consort Rd lane all the way to Dunston St

Church St

Carr St. It was a main shopping street until the 50s and stretched from Ellison St to Prince Consort Rd. I have thousands of photos including some of Carr street on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website.

Hebburn General Post Office

This was a Paper Shop called Hewisons .

This Hotel was on the corner of Ellison St and Lyon St and called the 'Commercial'

The Mortuary. I think it was originally built for the deaths that happened regularly at the pit.

The Dock Hotel in Tyne St. This was my Grandfather's local as he lived around the corner in Cuthbert St.

Whites Marine office block on Prince Consort Rd

The Relief Office was on the ground floor on Cuthbert St/Prince Consort road corner & I think it was 2 Cuthbert St. My gran Cecilia Rodger lived upstairs & each week she saw the queues of out of work men in the back yard stretching into the back lane. They were queuing for money to help feed their families so it was a bit like the Dole.

The remains of 'C' Pit. Hebburn had 3 pits 'A', 'B' & 'C' & Sir Humphrey Davy tested his safety lamp using methane gas from a Hebburn pit.
