West Yorkshire Power Company commissionede the building. The station came on line in 1927 and closed in October 1976. It was capable of generating 125MW. After Nationalisation in 1947 and the construction of a further power station some way to the west, it became known as Ferrybridge A Station. Ferrybridge B, built in the 1950s, has since been closed and demolished. Ferrybridge C is still generating electricity. The turbine hall at this older station still exists. The station was served, it appears, by both rail and waterway - the River Aire was navigable here
