My Granma Birhenough worked in the hip shop it was opposite fred the barbers accross the road that was not a good day to go to the barbers didnt have much hair left after the famous short back and sides. not to forget the ton of brilcream he put on after. so going to the chip shop made you forget about the hair cut. as we became 21 we was allowed in the pub for a drink, the crown inn was the main pub. remember the film of cigarette smoke let alone the works smog outside. use to sit in the geriatric room as we called it were les use to play the piano, had some good times and laughs in there.

I was looking around for the image of the gas works that I could remember as a kid growing up in Brightside, it stunk real bad but I suppose we got use to it. the plant had at least x3 ovens in the middle of all the metalwork that was painted grey.

After the birchenough family moved to 169 Meadowhall Road this is recorded in the 1911 census.my Ggrandfather James Birchenough married Florrie Chappell they finished up at 61 Limpsfield Road. many years later my grandmother now on her own moved to the new maisonettes at Norfolk Park and myself Trevor sister Glynis, parents John and Marion Wood moved into 61 limpsfield Road. all ready had a house in 33 Dearne Street, the corner house or the wedge house below the coop on Eben Sqaure. can remember the house shaking as the express trains went through Brightside station I would be about 4 years old.

In 1918, 11 Jenkin Road was the home of my paternal grandparents, Frank and Maud Aspinall. Daughter Winifred and sons, Frederick, Alfred (my father), Frank and Arthur. Fred is one of the thousands who died in WW1 without a known grave. His name is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing in Belgium. |
