1920 and 'Tonbridge' the station's name is clearly painted on its roof. Surely, this can only have been intended as a navigation aid for aircraft and airships?

No aircraft in this image but it dates from 1920 and the station name 'Tonbridge' is clearly painted on its roof. This must be an early example of a navigation aid for aircraft.

This image clearly shows Tonbridge's importance as a railway junction. On the top left is the line to and from Ashford, Folkestone and Dover, the line from Royal Tunbridge Wells and Hastings curl in the top left third. At the bottom right, the line curls off to London Bridge, Waterloo and Charing Cross while running straight off to the right is the line to Redhill, Guildford and Reading, opened in 1849 as a link to the Channel ports avoiding London.
