This street is recorded as Old End in 1890 map, although this whole area was known as Old End in 1841 census and before (Barton Street and Richard St. S). The higgledy-piggledy nature of street arrangement still exists in Barton Street and crooked alignment of Richard St. S., reflecting the haphazard development on the edge (end) of West Bromwich Heath which was enclosed in 1841. Many of these older properties (early to mid 19th Century) were demolished in the early 1920's.
Another such End is Lambert's End. |

Queen's Square. It really is tragic at how town planners ripped the old buildings and street patterns out of historic town centers during the 1960s and 1970s. It really is one of the greatest scandals of the last century. Once the novelty of the 'modern' architecture wore off over a couple of years, the negative social and economic impact of these new town centers played out over the decades ahead. How unfortunate that this scenario was repeated across the West Midlands, with Birmingham hardest hit and arguably it has never recovered and will never be the same powerhouse again. Only now in 2013 with the redevelopment of the town centre is West Bromwich becoming a place where you would actually choose to spend time.

Is this the school or is it St John's church which was just before the school? if this is Lyng Junior school, I see no evidence of the church just before it. |
