This building was the residence of William Pickles Hartley when jam and preserves production was transferred to this Aintree sight from Bootle in the 1880s. Mr Hartley and his family moved to a large villa in Southport in the early part of the twentieth century. The building remained in use for office space until the factory closed in the 1960s - Ironically Schweppes had a factory across Long Lane. This company bought out and closed Hartleys factory in the 1960s, transferring production down south. This was a trend to close businesses in the north and transfer to southern locations.. Mr Hartley was a philanthropic person during his lifetime who would never have contemplated closing his factory to give jobs to a prosperous southern location. |
