This was the base of a boys' gang who called themselves the 'river gang' ( myself and my brother Pat were founder members) . From this shingle beach they would launch a salvo of stones on any vessel that came within range -this included Police boats! We did for devilment really, only later did I realise how dangerous it was.

This bomb site was known by us kids in the 1960s as the 'Police Debris' - all the wate land created by the blitz was a termed the / a debris. Thus we had the Police debris and the Church debris ( area behind St John's church in Pier Road) . Generally, debris provided a safe place to play and use our imaginations. In addition, if you dug down into the ground on a debris you usually came across pieces of broken crockery and flattened enamel utensils etc. probably all that remained after being destroyed in the blitz.

This area we called the 'field'. It provided the children living in Sherbrooke Gardens with an all year round playground- we'd learn at a young age to jump water filled ditches, to climb trees, make bows and arrows and all the things you'd normally associate with country living. It was a fantastic place to grow up - we felt safe and were never really far from home. All our Mother had to do to get us to come home was to stand at the back door and bang a saucepan...and we were sure to come running.
