Former Olympic Picture House building purchased in 1923 by Southdown Motor Services Ltd. after the picture house burned down. Southdown retained the facade, but built a smallish bus garage on the cleared land behind it. Vacated by Southdown in 1956, the building stands to this day. Southdown also acquired further land immediately to the south of this on what used to be an ice rink and built a larger garage which opened in 1924 and can be clearly seen in the photo. This was also closed in 1956, when its new garage and bus station in Basin Road was opened, and subsequently demolished. It is now part of the car park of Metro House, an office building. |

Southdown Motor Services - first bus garage in the city from 1923. Was the former Olympic Picture House which burned down in 1921. Adjoining this, slightly to the south of this, Southdown had built in 1924 an additional larger garage on the site of the former ice rink. Both closed in 1956 when the new bus station and garage in Basin Road was opened. |
