North East Marine: In 1865 North East Marine Engineering Co developed at the South Docks, Sunderland, and in 1938 amalgamated with Richardson Westgarth & Co Ltd, a Hartlepool company, thus building up a specialised marine engineering firm with plants on Tyne, Wear and Tees. New Westminster City- ship in this image built 1929. William Reardon Smith & Sons had no less than four ships with this name. The company was based in Cardiff, and of 24 pre WW2 ships, all but one was sunk suring the war (some less complete records indicate 4 ships survived). The first ship named New Westminster City, built in 1929, was lost on Arctic convoy PQ13, 3rd April 1942. The second was also built in 1929 and purchased second hand in 1943, taking on the name New Westminster City in 1949. This is the ship in the image. She was sold to Japan in 1952 and renamed Tozai Maru No 7, further renamed to Risshun Maru in 1956, then scrapped in 1965. The third ship with this name was built in 1956, sold to Cyprus in 1970, onward sold to Panama in 1976 and renamed Agios Andreas and scrapped in 1979. There was also a fourth ship with the same name launched 1971, subsequently being sold on and bearing a number of names under several overseas flags / owners - sold 1983, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1998 and scrapped in 1998. Arraiolos: Built 1948 for Sociedade Geral de Comercio, Industria e Transportes, sold and renamed Fos 1 in 1976
