SR 40ton Ballast Hopper, probably one of those being built at Ashford in 1947. There are a couple of unfinished underframes to the right behind the next building. |

This is a line of underframes of Southern Railway 40 ton Ballast Hoppers. Twenty were built at Ashford in 1947 to Diagram 1775, with American-designed bogies.
Those in the photo have the end platforms and handrails, and are lacking the hopper and operating wheels.
There is a finished wagon behind the building on the right, near the steam locomotive. |
