Buildings surrounded by blast-proof [?] earth banks, suggesting they were used for mixing/preparing explosives

The Metals part of ICI became IMI - they used make make munitions at the Witton site (Eley brand I think) and the assembly huts were indeed surrounded by earth banks - either raised banks or sunken huts - in the event of an explosion the other huts (and workers) were protected from the blast. The area was in part referred to as the Kynoch Works.

These are probably wooden pathways to the huts - wood was used to prevent the build up of static electricity that could cause sparks that would ignite the munitions being assembled.
