Foghorns, a pair of Rayleigh trumpets. A foghorn was installed when the lighthouse opened in 1871, this was replaced in 1873 by twin horns, angled to give warning both up and down the coast. These were replaced by the horns in the photo' during the 1920s, and were in turn replaced by diaphone foghorns in 1953.

Souter Lighthouse was the first in the world to be designed to run an electrically powered light. The light was an arc light of 800,000 candlepower which was visible up to 26 miles away. The lighthouse was designed by James Nicholas Douglass, the Engineer-in-Chief of Trinity House, who was knighted after building the fourth Eddystone Lighthouse in 1882.

This picture is truly a landscape of change.

The pit has gone. The tip has been levelled and the quarry like depression between the pit and the sea has been filled in. The house in the foreground have gone. the railway has gone.

The light house remains and new housing has arrived.

Perhaps one for the book!
