I had great difficulty orienteering on this photograph and finding a suitable loch/lochan to fit the criteria in the photo. The shot is taken looking east towards Muir of Ord while flying north/south just to the south of the Orrin Reservoir; the dam was constructed in 1958. Using Google Earth and large scale OS maps, I think this is the lochan at position 57 30 05.0N 004 40 41.7W. It flows out to the west before turning SW and then east of south into the Caochan Dubh which then flows into the Allt Goibhre; the Allt Goibhre is a tributary of the Conon. The Allt Goibhre forms the valley that can be seen heading towards the horizon in the photo. The four summits that can be seen in the distance are - L to R - Cul Mor, Cul Beag, Cnoc Udais and Cnoc Croit na Maoile.
I think the pilot was being a naughty boy on this day and flying quite low(?). However, the clouds are fairly typical of what we get up here on the Moray Firth - Lenticular in shape caused by a stable air mass moving over mountains and giving a wave formation. |
