Hello, My name is Lori Shaul nee Wall. My grandfather, Leslie Frederick Wall grew up in Southdown, along with his 10 siblings at Melrose House, which I believe became Melrose Nurseries (but remained the Wall family home) sometime between 1900 and 1911. My great aunt, Hilda, Leslie's older sister, lived in Englishcombe Lane until she died in the 1970's. I just wanted to share this information with you perchance you knew the Wall family or anything about Melrose House. I believe it may have suffered bomb damage. With best regards, Lori Shaul |

I've seen several mentions of the Wall family in connection with Melrose Nurseries lately, while browsing back issues of The Bath Chronicle via the British Newspaper Archive. One of the articles I saw was about Charles Wall petitioning to retain the services of one of his sons at the nursery, having lost four of his employees to the Army by 1916. He argued that the nursery supported his large family. I don't believe I've ever come across a building called Melrose House in my studies of the area, but one pre WW1 article referred to C Wall "of Melrose, South Twerton". Melrose Grove was definitely bombed in WW2, with another bomb falling nearby just past where the Kingsway post office used to be until recently. Update: I just spotted a house named 'Melrose' on an OS plan of the early 1950's - it's the plot of land on the corner where Southdown Road meets the lower entrance to Hillcrest Drive. I also remembered hearing tell of a Melrose Fish Bar near the Southdown Stores. |

The house is called Melrose Nursery and still stands. I have lived in it for the past few years and know some history. If you want to chat get in touch. |
