' It is interesting to see how relatively smaller amounts of traffic in 1947 have 'marked' the surface of the road to show the 'drive lines'. This is probably a reflection of different types of 'metalling' used in making the surface. It is likely that stone set on tar was still the way of resurfacing and that the movement of vehicles brought the tar to the surface, so darkening the road where the traffic ran. It is so marked that I thought it might be tram lines until I realised there are no poles for the overhead let alone the number of 'cars' (that is trams cars) seen on the road to the right. '
